 The word Christmas is Old English, a contraction of Christ's Mass.

Many people believe that the abbreviation of X-mas is taking Christ out of Christmas. In fact, this abbreviation is derived from the Greek alphabet. X is the letter Chi which is the first letter of Christ's name in Greek. So, using the abbreviation X-mas still has the inclusion of Christ.

Silent Night was written in 1818, by an Austrian priest Joseph Mohr. He was told the day before Christmas that the church organ was broken and would not be prepared in time for Christmas Eve. He was saddened by this and could not think of Christmas without music, so he wanted to write a carol that could be sung by choir to guitar music. He sat down and wrote three stanzas. Later that night the people in the little Austrian Church sang "Stille Nacht" for the first time.

December 26th is commonly known as Boxing Day. This expression came about because money was collected in alms-boxes placed in churches during the festive season. This money was then distributed during to the poor and needy after Christmas.

In 1834, Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert brought the first Christmas tree to Windsor Castle for the Royal family.

In 1836, Alabama is the first state in the USA to declare Christmas a legal holiday.

The first President to decorate the White House with a Christmas tree was Franklin Pierce in 1856.

Christmas became a national holiday in America on June, 26, 1870.

The Christmas tree was first decorated with lights in the 16th century. It is believed that Martin Luther, the Protestant reformer, was the first to add lighted candles to the tree. He was so taken with the Christmas night sky that he wished to bring "the lights of the stars" into the home of his family. From this, decorating the tree with ornaments, messages and notes, and small gifts emerged in later centuries leading to our customs today. Electric lights, however, were not used on Chrsitmas trees until 1895.

Oklahoma became the last USA state to declare Christmas a legal holiday in 1907

In 1937, the first postage stamp to commemorate Christmas was issued in Austria.

"Rudolph" actually began as a holiday promotion for Montgomery Ward in the late 1930's and it took off from their.

Santa's Reindeers are Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Donner and Blitzen.

Santa Clause, however, is not the bringer of gifts in every country. For example:

Italy: La Befana (a kindly old witch)

France: Pere Noel (Father Christmas)
Russia: In some parts - Babouschka (a grandmotherly figure)
Other parts it is Grandfather Frost.
Germany: Christkind (angelic messenger from Jesus)

Scandinavia: a variety of Christmas gnomes. One is called Julenisse
Holland: St Nicholas.

The popular Christmas song "Jingle Bells" was composed in 1857 by James Pierpont, and was originally called "One-Horse Open Sleigh."

The tradition of Christmas lights dates back to when Christians were persecuted for saying Mass. A simple candle in the window meant that Mass would be celebrated there that night.
